Washington Luntley (1850-1917)
Washington Luntley was born in Stepney in Middlesex in 1850. His parents were Philip James Luntley (1794-1853) and Mary Jane, nee Lister (1809-1886). His mother Mary was from Scarborough. and He married Ann Elizabeth Hurd (1850-1933) in Bethnal Green in 1870. Ann was like Washington’s mother from Scarborough and it is thought that they moved to the town soon after marrying. Washington’s brother Philip James Luntley (1834-1896) was also in Scarborough, initially becoming a pork butcher (1871) and then running an aerated water and ginger beer manufactory (until at least 1881) before setting up a music shop (1891) at 32 North Street. The music shop was destroyed by fire in 1894. Washington is also recorded as a sewing machine agent in Norfolk (1891), and a photographer in Sussex (1901). Soon after 1900 he set up a grocers shop in Armley, Leeds. He died in Leeds in 1917.
Washington and Ann had six children, Henrietta (1873-1933), John Washington (1874-1895), Henry Lister (1876-1953), Florence (b.1878), Annie (1880-1950) and Eleanor (1882-1883). Ann is buried in Manor Road Cemetery, Scarborough. Washington seems to be absent from the family home possibly from as early as 1891.
