Herbert Walker (1882-1962)
Herbert Walker was born in Driffield in 1882. The was living in Scarborough and working as a photographer with a studio in Huntriss Row by 1909. He operated from a number of different studios before settling in St. Thomas Street in the early 1930s. In 1933 he went into partnership with Harry Bennett and Walkers Studios Ltd was formed. They specialised in wedding, sporting, theatre and outdoor group photographs. In the late 1960s they were to purchase John W Gray’s company and employ Neville Gray as principle photographer. In 1970 they moved across the road and the majority of their negatives were disposed of. The company stopped their photography business in 2002 when David Gray was the photographer and owner of the company. Walkers Studios Ltd still exists today and operates out of the former studio at 41 St Thomas Street, but now sells electrical equipment.
on 4 January 1962 Walker died in Belvedere Nursing Home in Scarborough, he had been living at 10 Belmont Road, Scarborough. The executers of his will were Alan Herbert Walker a musician and Harry Bennett his former business partner. He estate was valued at £11,082 15s 5d.
