Osguthorpe Brothers / Bros.

Harry (b.1864) and Herbert (1869-1954) Osguthorpe were the sons of Henry and Mary Osguthorpe who were both photographers themselves. They were born in Sheffield when their father was working as a photographer there and moved with the family to Scarborough in c.1871. Following Henry’s death in 1883 Mary took over his business. Both sons seem to have worked with their parents and learned the art of photography from them. From about 1900 the brothers had set up the Tudhoe Grange Studio in Spennymoor, presumably after Herbert had married Elizabeth Smith (born in West Rainton, County Durham) in 1897. Harry had married Annie in St Mary’s Church, Scarborough in 1901, but was already lodging in Edward Street, Spennymoor. They had two sons John Alfred (1898-1916, died at the battle of Jutland) and Herbert (b.1905). In 1911 the studio was listed at 18 King Street in Spennymoor. An H. Osguthorpe operated a photographic studio in Spennymoor without their brother into the 20th century, which brother this is is unclear.
