Joseph Smithson Winter (& Son)

Born in Wakefield in 1815 Joseph Smithson Winter was not known in Scarborough until 1859 when he went into partnership with Mr Clark, opening a photographic studio under the name of Clark and Winter. The following year he left the partnership to open a new studio with his son Edwin who was now 19 years old. Adverts for the ‘Crystal Photographic Studio’ in Marine Parade claimed that they had 7 years photographic experience. On a Wednesday they travelled to Beverley where they operated from the Market. They seem to have moved their business there sometime after 1861. They were still operating in the town in the late 1860s. In 1881 both Edwin and his father seem to have left photography behind and are recorded in Ocean Place, Hull as musical instrument makers and music teachers.

Joseph Smithson Winter married Elizabeth (b.1814) they had two children Edwin (b.1841) and Mary Emma (1845). The whole family was born in Wakefield and Edwin and Mary were still with their parents in Hull in 1881, both unmarried.
