Charles Raven Shaw (1873-1917)
Charles Raven Shaw was the son of the Huddersfield photographer John Edward Shaw (c.1849-1916) and his wife Martha (nee. Robinson). Charles joined his father in the photographic business in 1894 when they opened a studio together under the name of John Edward Shaw and Son in Mirfield and later a second studio in Sheffield. In the 1901 Census Charles and his wife Lily were boarding at 88 Prospect Road in Scarborough. He had at this time a studio in his own name in Huntriss Row. By 1909 he was back in Sheffield living at the studio. when his father died in 1916 Charles inherited the business. For a period he seems to have gone into partnership with a Mr Wilkinson. However only a year after his father’s death he had put the business up for sale. In December 1917 after failing to return home to his lodging at 27 Trinity Street in Huddersfield, Mr Wilkinson went with the police to the studio and and found his body. It was reported that he had been acting strangely recently and his death was recorded as suicide.
Charles married Lily Edith Southworth at the High Street Chapel in Huddersfield on 25 Match 1896. They had one child Raymond Herbert Shaw (1897-1960?).
